Less than an hour’s drive from Las Vegas, Tule Springs Fossil Beds offer visitors the chance to view the remains of prehistoric animals. The 22,600 acres were designated a national monument in 2014.
More than 200,000 years ago, the dry fossil beds were a wetland habitat and home to a diverse range of species. Paleontologists theorize that animals flocked to the area for water but were swallowed by massive mud pits. Their remains were left intact for millennia.
The fossils of Ice Age animals, such as mammoths, ancient horse species, wolves, and many others, can be found in the dry beds. Archaeological studies began in the area in the 1960s. Due to the variety of fossil samples found in the beds, they were selected for preservation and protection by the National Park Service.
